Greetings from the Cypress High School Parent Association official email!
I’ve set up a Google account to make it easier to communicate and keep track of the group: firstname.lastname@example.org. Please feel free to forward this to other parents not included above.
The Cypress High School Parent Association had their first of the school year meeting on Tuesday, August 30th at the Starbucks near school. Twelve parents showed as well as our principal, Daniel Stonebloom and we had an excellent discussion. We decided to hold the meetings once a month on the 3rd Tuesday alternating between morning and evening. The next meeting will be on Tuesday, September 20th at 7 pm and we need to find a place to hold the meetings where about 10-20 people can talk. If you know of a location that’s appropriate, please let me know.
Alberta James is our treasurer continuing from last year as the accountant and keeper of the funds. We discussed the concept that our Parent Association funds should be used for things that directly help the students of Cypress. We have scholarships for seniors who apply and present to a review committee as well as miscellaneous requests from student clubs, teachers and staff for various projects.
We also discussed fundraising. In the past we’ve participated in the Toyota Drive for Schools and will again this year. The tickets will be available on Back to School Night, Wednesday, Sept. 14, and Daniel will pick up the tickets that evening. They will be distributed to the students who have sold them after that.
If you have any ideas for fundraising that has worked for other organizations in the past, please let us know. We’re open to all ideas.
Other fundraising that has worked to raise funds are Auction (either live or “fake”), eScrip and Box Tops for Education. It was decided that the effort put into the box tops may not be worth the return. Apparently there’s now a 25 cent charge per transaction for eScrip, but Becky Schmauch offered to take care of the eScrip.
Uses for the funds could include some or all of the following:
- Student scholarships
- Fall Field Trip Day
- Misc. field trips throughout the school year
- Guest speakers for school assemblies and parent/student education meetings
- Misc. requests from teachers for classroom or project supplies
One of the first guest speaker programs that Cypress would like to have is the Invincible Youth Program for all students to help them define goals and develop a safety net for support among the important adults in their life. More information will be forthcoming on this program.
Other topics under consideration for education meetings are nutrition, gender issues, the college process and the driver’s license process. If you have any ideas for a guest speaker or topic, please let us know.
Another issue is a directory of the school to encourage carpooling. It could be either printed or online. We’ll be asking families to opt in for this.
That’s all for now. Remember Back to School night is Wednesday, September 14. Your student will bring home a schedule of their classes for that night. If you have more than one student, please have more than one parent/guardian attend.
